Pupil Premium

The Government introduced the Pupil Premium Grant in April 2011. This is a grant which is additional to main school funding and is seen by the Government as the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals and their wealthier peers, by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most. The Pupil Premium is allocated to schools and is clearly identifiable. Schools can decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.

The pupil premium is allocated to schools in respect of children from low-income families who are currently known to be eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) and children who are looked after (LAC). This applies to both mainstream and non-mainstream settings. From 2012-13 this also included pupils eligible for FSM at any point in the last six years (known as the Ever 6 FSM measure).

Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit to “close the gap” between children from disadvantaged circumstances and those above the low-income threshold – it is not linked to a specific child but is to be used for overall impact. However, we are held accountable for how we have used the additional funding to support pupils from low-income families.

 At Yelvertoft School we support all our pupils by providing high quality classroom teaching, supplemented by interventions to support vulnerable learners as and when required. The School Leadership team and Governing Body monitor the impact of all spending and interventions, including the Pupil Premium.

This money is used to fund, or partially fund, the following activities and support, to enhance the learning of those pupils are eligible for Pupil Premium.

Activities supported include;

  • To provide targeted intervention programmes to support emotional and social skills
  • To support and subsidise school trips
  • To provide specialised training for staff
  • To provide pupils with additional support from teaching assistants within classrooms
  • To provide specific educational resources – such as software to supplement learning
  • To source outside expertise to support pupils and to meet the needs of targeted pupil

We carefully monitor the progress of disadvantaged children through regular pupil progress meetings with teaching staff. Support is put in place where appropriate and outcomes from Pupil Attainment monitored.
